Fight Rope Athlete Spotlight: Roman Bravo-Young
Wrestling is a foundational platform for so many in mixed martial arts. Roman Bravo-Young, 23, from Tucson is a Penn State wrestler and two-time National Champion. This past weekend he went undefeated in colleges most stacked weight class at 133lbs or 60kg. Fight rope athletes hail from all over the world, but there is something to be said about Arizona, and not just anywhere in Arizona, but Tucson where champions tend to embrace the grind of hardship only to find the rhythm to succeed in all venues of live.
Roman Bravo-Young started off at Sunnyside High school racking up an undefeated career and four state titles. However, aside from the physical achievement he is a superior student. His academic accolades are equally as amazing. As an athlete we have strong mentors who shape us and we take a glimmer of their skillset and see if it fits into our arsenal of weapons. The mentor dominus for Roman Bravo-Young is Tucson raised, San Diego made Dominic Cruz who is not only a fightrope.com athlete, but a several time and longstanding UFC champion at 135lbs or Bantamweight.
True to his word Roman came to San Diego to train with the most elusive man in all of MMA and the world class athletes he surrounds himself with: Wrestlers (Orlando Jimenez), jujitsu practitioners, judo experts (like JFLO Justin Flores), etc. to build what has turned out to be the ideal wrestling form of movement and attack. After spending time in San Diego, the movement and flow of RBY’s wrestling has made him one of the most challenging wrestlers to score and even for the likes of Dayton Fix, Austin DeSanto, and the litany of dangerous individuals at that weight class.
The wisdom of seeking out new dance partners, is that we learn and grow as athletes and people. Dominic Cruz is by far the best to develop a cadence for movement. In his matches this season clean wrestling, cardio always at it’s best with our fight ropes, a champions mindset for learning, and a willingness to seek out high level athletes and programs to start out the absolute best in life.
Roman Bravo-Young, if there was ever a visage to assign to the words All-American, his face would don to cover.
